2009-05-21

As part of We Are the Future (WAF) program that is being implemented by Nablus Municipality in cooperation with a number of European institutions and municipalities, and aims at empowering youth in Nablus to address the needs of children, Eng. Adly Yaish Mayor of Nablus, and Mr. Ezzeddine Bouttrif Director of Nutrition and Consumer Protection Division at Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have signed yesterday a Memorandum of Understanding.

This agreement entails implementing second stage of WAF's Micro Garden project; a pioneering youth project that aims at educating youth and spreading awareness among them regarding nutrition and organic agriculture issues in order to enable them manage their own future projects and join labor market. Youth will also transfer their experience to marginalized children from Nablus through conducting a number of workshops about food security, nutrition and agriculture and other essential topics. The said project entails growing different kinds of free chemical - fertilizers vegetables in a land dedicated for this purpose and located at Jamal Abdel Nasser Public Park. Youth will market their organic products in the local market in order to generate income that enables them establish their own agricultural cooperatives.

This phase is an extension of the Micro Garden project that was launched beginning of 2006 and funded by Regio Emilia Municipality in Italy where a greenhouse was constructed.

WAF program is an international youth capacity building initiative implemented by International Relations Department of Nablus Municipality, and comprises of four sectors namely; Arts, Sports, ICT and Micro Garden. It is supported by a number of international organizations such as UN Habitat, Municipality of Geneva, FIFA, Microsoft and other donor organizations.
